YOUNG MUSLIM ASSOCIATION & GARISSA MUSLIM CHILDREN'S HOME
YOUNG MUSLIM FARM
This is one of the earliest projects of the Association having
been initiated in 1974 in a small scale and 1978 on a large scale.
The farm consists of both dairy cows and crops section.
The farm occupies total land acreage of 124 acres.
A good portion of which has been cleared and served with both
concrete and earth canals.
The main activities going on at the moment include the mango project
which has about 600 mature trees and 100 young ones.
Apart from the mango project, we have the dairy cows.
The dairy section was initiated in 1984 and together with
the crop section aimed at generating income for the center,
thus subsidizing the cost of runing it.
Although this objective has not been fully achieved,
the farm has played a big role in providing fruits and
fresh milk to the children in addition to raising income for
sustaining itself.
Both the crop and the dairy section have potential in income
generation if new strategies are put in place and revival steps are taken.
Already a feasibility report has been prepared for the dairy section
which will be forwarded to donors for support.
The farm has a big store, an office and one staff house.
It has two diesel engines run pumps for effective irrigation.
The farm is also supplied with electricity.
The farm has recently received boost through the active
participation of the YMA/Garissa sub-committee. The effort of the
sub-committee and that of the director has resulted in the
clearing of the notorious mathenge (prosobis Juliflora)
from an area close to 70 acres and the planting of 1000 banana
trees and pilot trial plants of Jathropa(diesel plant).
It is the vision of this committee to develop the farm so
as to realize its full potential.
